In September 2016, the Environmental Seremi of the Atacama Region contacted us to solve one of the most complex challenges we have had, which was to develop the Management Plan for the Cultural Heritage of the Marine and Coastal Protected Area of Isla Grande de Atacama, considering the Anthropology, Archeology and Paleontology findings.
Sometimes, cultural heritage conservation projects have a very intense start, only to diminish over time. The reasons? They can be many…from a deviation in the initial approach, to relevant data collection problems, going through the difficult stage of citizen engagement.
As well as in all the projects that we receive in our team, we did an exhaustive background analysis, since, according to what was reported, this project had a history of failed starts due to many reasons. Therefore, our challenge was to deal with an annoying group of stakeholders that were relevant to the success of the project.
Fortunately, the team in charge of this project is experienced and has an innate charisma that greatly helped the community trust Mankuk’s work and this new process, which started practically from scratch and, eventually, the community began to collaborate by engaging the way it was required. Thanks to the field data collection, the Citizen Engagement and Bibliographic Review workshops in the Cabinet, we were able to carry out the Base Characterization of the status in which all these environmental components were found, with which improvement strategies were defined, as well as the objectives that promoted the plan and the development of the latter based on the territorial and administrative planning of the AMCP-MU IGA.
The main outcome of this project can be seen in the book Marine and Coastal Protected Area of Multiple Uses of Isla Grande de Atacama: Enhancement of its Cultural Heritage, published in August 2017, which reflects all the discoveries and background of this wonderful legacy from the north of our country.
Thanks to our work, the communities of the area have agreed to collaborate with other studies and projects that have been developed in the place as an integral part of the heritage of the region.
Alexander is a co-founding partner of Mankuk. A civil engineer from Universidad de Chile. He has more than 16 years of experience leading environmental consultancy projects for the private industry and state-owned enterprises, in areas such as mining and energy.
Alexander has led countless projects related to archaeological management, environmental impact studies and statements, processing of sectorial permits, and engineering projects associated with sanitation, irrigation, and hydraulic projects. Alexander’s great leadership capacity allows him to deliver technical, environmental, and managerial solutions for the development of the projects entrusted to him, bringing great energy to the team. Today, Alexander plays a fundamental role as partner and managing director of Mankuk, providing direct support to clients throughout the different stages of project development.
Marta Aguilera
Senior Project Manager
Marta is a Lawyer from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and holds a Master's degree in Environmental Law from the Rovira i Virgili University. She has 10 years of experience in consultancy projects and legal advice in environmental matters.
Her areas of expertise include environmental, corporate, and real estate issues, serving sectors such as energy, industry, and mining, among others. Marta stands out for her leadership, management, and supervision of her teams, which enables the successful achievement of proposed objectives.
Loreto Rojas
Senior Project Manager
A geographer from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, with a broad experience in territorial planning, environmental assessment, and geographic information systems. She has actively participated in leading, coordinating, and supervising complex hydrology projects, fire assessment, environmental impact statements, and processing of sectorial permits for private and public organizations.
Her great charisma, optimism, and enthusiasm make Loreto a key member when it comes to overcoming the challenges, we face every day.
Miguel Burgos

Miguel is an environmental engineer and holds a master degree in environmental sciences from Universidad Santiago de Chile. He has more than fourteen years of experience in participating, leading, coordinating, and supervising sanitation and environmental projects, permits processing, and issues related to highly complex projects in the areas of waste of all kinds, regulatory compliance control, and environmental rating solutions. Miguel is a professional who stands out for his commitment and excellent relationship with his clients and the entire Mankuk team which, combined with his professional qualifications, make him a key member for us.
Mauricio Compagnon
Socio Director
Mauricio es ingeniero civil industrial de la P. Universidad Católica de Chile, socio co-fundador de Mankuk y cuenta con más de 15 años de experiencia como consultor y desarrollo de servicios medioambientales para proyectos de gran envergadura en los rubros de minería, energía, transporte e industria en general.
Mauricio, gracias a sus conocimientos y habilidades natas, posee una visión amplia y detallada de los requerimientos medioambientales a que se ven afectos proyectos de inversión, lo que le permite realizar recomendaciones acertadas en los momentos precisos. Mauricio cumple actualmente un rol clave en la administración y gestión comercial de Mankuk, lidera equipos de trabajo dedicados al estudio de licitaciones y elaboración de propuestas y participa directamente como Gerente de Consultoría para los distintos proyectos de la empresa.
